Protective Wrap Removal Guidelines
The frustration of working with and trying to remove the protective wrapping that was factory installed on trims and Insulated Metal Panels and other products is an industry problem. Removing protective wrap, often called strippable film or temporary protective film, is a necessary step in the installation of the product.
If everything would go as planned in construction; schedules remain constant, weather fully cooperates, trucking shows up on time and loads are protected, STOP, this is construction and rarely does that happen.
Here are some Steps and Ideas that will reduce the frustration and make your project go a little smoother.
Timing Recommendations
- Immediate Removal: Remove the film as panels are installed. Pre-installation removal is preferable to avoid trapping film in panel joints.
- Maximum Duration: Do not leave film on for more than 8–10 weeks from production or 4–6 months if stored indoors. Include this requirement in contracts.
- UV Exposure: Sunlight and heat can bond adhesive to the finish, making removal extremely difficult.
Standard Removal Process
- Start at an Edge: Lift a corner using a fingernail or plastic scraper.
- Peel at 45°: Pull slowly toward yourself to reduce tearing and adhesive transfer.
- Tube Method: For large sheets, wrap the edge around a rigid cardboard tube and roll for even removal.
Handling Stubborn or Aged Film
- Heat: Use a heat gun or heavy-duty hair dryer at 6–8 inches, moving constantly to avoid damage.
- Chemical Removers: Apply approved products (e.g., Clean Sweep) or mild solvents like rubbing alcohol. For cracked film, let chemicals sit for 10–20 minutes. Always confirm with the manufacturer to avoid voiding warranties.
- Adhesive Tape: Press high-tack duct tape over stubborn spots and pull sharply.
Precautions
- Always Check with your Manufacturer FIRST. You don’t won’t to void a Finish Warranty.
- No Abrasives: Avoid steel wool, wire brushes, or metal scrapers to prevent scratches and corrosion.
- Test First: Check solvents on an inconspicuous area and confirm with the manufacturer.
- Final Cleaning: Wipe with a microfiber cloth and mild soapy water to remove residue.
