Message from the President - Jan '21

President's Message,
I don't know how to start this month's news without commenting on the news. I suspect many of us have been glued to the news cycle these last few weeks if not longer!
Politics has no home in the MBCEA. We do not lobby or take positions or sides. Rather we have one simple goal - the professional advancement of our members and our industry.
We often use phrases in this column like "we are stronger together" but this month, I feel it is important to clarify we are stronger together as long as we stay true to core values of respect, integrity, and tolerance.
Regardless of our differences, we all have common goals. We all want a better world for our children. We all want, in the words of our Declaration of Independence, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I think it would do us all good to take a breath and realize that for the most part we are all good people trying to make sense of challenging, emotionally-charged issues.  Different opinions are not cause for ridicule or vitriol, they are simply different view points.
I urge you to be mindful of the current tensions and its effect on ourselves, our staff and our businesses. As entrepreneurs, iron-workers, and "manly men" we tend to bottle up our feelings and just keep pushing ahead. Take some advice - it's OK to let yourself take a break, unplug, disconnect and unwind. In fact it is mandatory; and not just for you, your people need to as well. And now more than ever we need to be especially vigilant of our workers safety and how these pressures can put them at risk.
Stress levels are at an all time high - not just politics but the on-going pandemic and all it has done to our lives. Do not presume you know what your people are feeling or even dealing with. Stress affects everyone differently - some bottle it in, others act out. Take some time to remind your people of the need for self care. Re-emphasize your views on tolerance and respect. Remember also, that we are judged by our actions more than our words, and that we teach our people by example.
With those mindful thoughts, please read all the articles in our January newsletter. There is plenty of great information and worthwhile news. We have a lot going on and much to be proud of. Don't forget to check out our new and improved website and member’s area
If you have not yet done so, please renew your membership. Now more than ever, we can all benefit from the strength of our association and the depth of our friendships.
