MBCEA Apprenticeship is Real
For many members of the MBCEA, apprenticeship remains a lofty but esoteric goal. In the conversations I and the other members of the Apprenticeship Committee have with people, the perception is that it’s a laudable objective that we will reach some time in the distant future. I am happy to report that nothing could be further from the truth.
The first MBCEA supported apprenticeship program for metal building assembly is up and running in Pennsylvania. In partnership with the ABC Keystone Chapter, the first class is scheduled to start the state approved program in very short order. Students will be provided with both the valuable classroom work needed to understand important concepts and the on-the-job training that is so critical to the success of any apprenticeship program. The seats will be filled by workers from MBCEA member companies and the curriculum will consist of training that both MBCEA and MBI played a role in developing.
The point? MBCEA supported apprenticeship programs are in the “here and now”. This is not to say that there isn’t work to do, but progress is being made and the reality of apprenticeship programs that will support industry development for years to come is real. It’s important that everyone join the cause and try to find a way to support the MBCEA’s efforts at apprenticeship.
